A key element of the P2zero® Pathways service is helping organisations understand where they are today. This assessment and benchmarking is critical to creating a credible and effective carbon reduction plan. The scope varies from a very specific part of the business (such as end user computing or data centres) to an assessment of emissions across the entire organisation.   It can also determine staff and stakeholder attitudes and engagement, ready to build the partnerships which are essential for success.

Options include:

• Establishing the current scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint
• Examining ICT (devices, data centres and services), premises, travel, transportation and waste 
• Detailed sustainability profiling of your supply chain
• Helping organisations to understand the role of sustainability, ESG, reporting & compliance
• Aligning sustainability with business aims and engaging key stakeholders
• Establishing a company-level sustainability strategy (internal and/or customer facing)

To be effective a sustainability strategy has to be framed in the wider strategic context.  Organisations set different net zero targets and target dates.  They also have different priorities, budgets, operational constraints and strategic considerations.   Our Pathways service includes time to understand what sustainability means to your organisation and what success looks like.

The key deliverable of the Pathways service is a clear view of your options and suggested actions to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability.  Using the data gathered in the "current" and "future" exercises we can provide actionable insights and a detailed carbon reduction plan. 

The service includes:  

• Detailed options for the reduction of company, departmental, functional or regional scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions 
• Providing detailed modelling and  “what if” analysis to assist with carbon reduction planning
• Profiling of the impacts of changes to business activities such as sustainable procurement, commuting, business travel and home working
• Providing organisational and team specific assessments of net zero readiness

No sustainability strategy will succeed if it does not actively engage staff and stakeholders at every level of the organisation. The Engagement component of the P2zero®  Partnership service is designed to increase awareness, commitments and agency within the organisation, from board level to departmental, team and and individual level.  It typically involves workshops and webinars and includes:  

• Creating / contributing to a communication and engagement plan
• Providing bespoke training on key topics such as environmental impacts and compliance
• Creating specific carbon reduction plans for all parts of the organisation
• Identifying opportunities for company, departmental, team and individual KPIs and contributions to be measured, tracked and for progress to be reported via metrics and dashboards
• Providing customised on-line training and staff certification

For most organisations supply chain and purchased goods is responsible for a significant percentage of their scope 3 emissions.  The Supply Chain & Procurement component of our Partnership service is designed to engage with your supply chain to gather information about their strategies, commitments and progress across the spectrum of sustainable procurement.  It typically involves workshops and surveys and includes:  

• Training for procurement staff on sustainability concepts and "gateway" processes
• Assessing the customer-specific emissions data available from suppliers from purchased goods and services (rather than spend-based analysis)
• Profiling the sustainability credentials and certification of suppliers, goods and services
• Providing weighted scoring and selection criteria for environmental and social value 

With multi-year managed service contracts covering over 350,000 devices, P2zero is well-established as a leading provider of sustainability reporting services.  Our contracts cover both public and private sector, with high-profile customers including including multiple UK central government departments and a major high-street bank.

Our reporting is tailored to customer's requirements and covers either key metrics of their IT estate, the emissions of their supply chain partners in providing managed services, or both.   As part of the service P2zero provides a carbon footprint statement of our own service emissions in delivering the service.

Our customer managed service establishes an initial baseline and identifies the specific metrics and targets for each customer.  We also identify which are the most important metrics and trends to highlight in reports and dashboards.  

The scope of our reporting can include any of the following:

• End User Computing devices (laptops, desktops and monitors)
• Servers, storage and networking equipment
• Mobile devices (tablets and smartphones)
• Large peripherals (docking stations, printers etc)

The exact format and KPIs reported and tracked is agreed with each customer prior to commencement, however as a minimum we will track scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions plus progress against net zero objectives.

Where a customer invests in a managed service (for example in "device as a service" or hardware maintenance) having an independent assessment of the detailed service emissions can be very beneficial. This is particularly the case if the service provider has committed to reduce their emissions in line with the customer's own net zero targets.

After an initial baseline exercise our service provides KPIs, trends and "progress against objectives" reporting for the managed service, looking at the specific resources, devices and key factors such as energy use, travel and waste.  Reporting is typically monthly, but can be live, quarterly or annual depending on requirements. 

Sustainability data is often difficult to interpret as it is reported differently, is based on specific assumptions or only includes certain data points.  In addition most organisations have different targets and priorities, meaning that a generic approach and report is unlikely to offer a good enough fit.

The P2zero sustainability Index (PSI) is designed to allow customisation and customer-specific metrics without the need for lengthy and expensive consultancy engagements.  It also references substantial benchmarking data to provide an easy way to rank strategies and devices against best practice, industry standards and real world data.

Transparency and independence are key to the service, so methodologies, standards and reference data are clearly presented, together with a carbon footprint statement for every assessment undertaken.

Profiling device sustainability is a complex task, particularly if you want the comparison to accurately reflect the ways and locations you use devices and to take a wider view on sustainability than just carbon footprint.  

Our Device PSI service is based on customer specific variables (not spend or industry averages) and covers:

• End User Computing devices (laptops, desktops and monitors)
• Servers, storage and networking equipment
• Mobile devices (tablets and smartphones)
• Large peripherals (docking stations, printers etc)

Our Device PSI rating takes three or more of the following into account, depending on device type: 

• Standard sustainability metrics (scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions)
• Energy consumption
• Ranking against the database of all devices profiled by our consultancy teams
• Independent certification & accreditation
• Planetary impact
• Adoption of circular economy principles

For many organisations the responsibilities for ESG and sustainability are distributed across multiple teams, with no simple framework, standards or systems for reporting.  Fully integrated and automated reporting systems can be complex and expensive to set up, requiring extensive consultancy and customer time.    

At P2zero we have not set out to solve the entire ESG "problem", but simply to provide an easy, cost-effective way to capture,  evaluate and visualise the sustainability components. 

The service includes:

• Baseline evaluation of sustainability strategy, key objectives, progress against objectives, data quality & integrity and certification 
• Assessment of policy and delivery against key sustainability elements including emissions reporting, planetary impact, circular economy and supply chain considerations 
• Dashboard reporting and visualisation of findings
• Monthly or annual reporting and trending as a project engagement or managed service
