P2zero were engaged by innovative technology company Green Cloud Computing (https://www.greencloudcomputing.io/) to evaluate the sustainability and business case metrics for their new cloud proposition.  

Our study compared two use cases for the Green Cloud technology (using "crowd-sourced" compute powered by renewable energy and using "idle" capacity within the organisation) with using public cloud services or purchasing new data centre capacity.  

Our results will be published soon in a new case study.

Does the new generation of Apple devices offer significant sustainability benefits over the main competition?  

That was the question posed to P2zero by technology specialists Academia, who commissioned an independent study of the credentials of a selection of makes and models of laptops, mobile workstations, desktops and integrated devices.

The results will help Academia to offer their customers advice on how to make more sustainable product choices .

Teesside Cloud Labs Case Study

Every year Defra issues a "Greening Government ICT" report detailing emissions from digital infrastructure and services used by 630,000 staff working in UK departments and agencies.

In our GDSA role on the Scope 3 Working Group P2zero reviewed the reporting process and metrics to determine whether more specific and granular data could be sourced and used in the report to improve its usability as a baseline for and action area for carbon reduction plans.

Our latest case study showcases sustainable innovation by Teesside University and AWS.  


"P2zero were a pleasure to work with and gave us valuable insights into the outliers and practices of parts of our hardware estate, of which we were simply not aware"  


Calculating the sustainability and cost benefits of Teesside's approach to delivering high performance computing for students the study found up to 78% emissions reduction and 28% cost savings. You can read the full case study here.

DEFRA organised an all day GDSA workshop at Cap Gemini's ASE facility in central London to discuss the UK government's sustainable ICT strategy for 2025 - 2030.


The excellent event brought together government representatives from across multiple  departments, Crown Commercial Services and working party members from across the GDSA and helped to better inform the attendees about government ICT and sustainability strategy and shape objectives for 2025 and beyond.

 The QS Sustainability Rankings for 2025 has placed Imperial as joint seventh in the world, joint fourth in Europe, and joint second in the UK, recognising the university’s commitment to putting sustainability at the heart of its work and playing a leading role in the global fight against climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.     The ranking looks at three categories – Environmental Impact, Social Impact, and Governance – to analyse the sustainability work of more than 1,500 higher education institutions globally, including around 100 institutions in the UK.  Read more about the news here and our case study with Imperial here.

At the start of the new year P2zero's CEO Ewen Anderson has been asked to take on the chair role for the Scope 3 Working Party of the UK Government Digital Sustainability Alliance (GDSA).  The working party is assisting DEFRA and sustainability leads across government to look at the digital  supply chain emissions of over 600,000 UK government and agency employees  Chris Howes (Chief Digital and Information Officer at DEFRA) shares his views on the role and importance of the GDSA here.

Managed Services Success

15th November 2024

2024 has seen P2zero expand from project services into multi-year managed service contracts.  We now have over 350,000 devices under contract with clients including central government, retail banking, technology and international accountancy / financial services.

Our team provide dashboards and reporting on KPIs and trends, helping these organisations track their progress in decarbonising their digital estates.  More about our managed services here.

As part of P2zero's work with the UK Government Digital Sustainability Alliance (GDSA) we are conducting a survey of sustainability leads across all government departments into "scope 3".  

The confidential results will help the working party and DEFRA understand the government reporting "landscape" and identify where the Alliance can offer practical support including insights, case studies and best practice.  More information about the GDSA is available here.

To assist organisations with their sustainability and ESG commitments we have launched our P2zero Sustainability Index rating service (PSI).  

The first two modules focus on profiling current sustainability strategy and making more sustainable device choices.  PSI is designed to provide a highly cost-effective way to visualise and compare complex, customer-specific data to assist with decision making.  More information about our PSI services is available here.

The British Computer Society invited Ewen Anderson of P2zero to present a session on "Beyond the Baseline - Using Data to Drive Measurable Carbon Reduction" at this years' Green IT Specialist Group AGM.


The evening session was held at the BCS offices in central London with a webinar option available for remote members of the Institute.   More information about the BCS is available here.

P2zero were pleased to provide a sustainability briefing workshop for one of the largest UK government departments at the impressive Computacenter Circular Services facility at Braintree.  As well as a tour, (showcasing how devices are reclaimed, re-used and responsibly recycled) delegates could also donate personal IT equipment that was beyond its useful life.   Very important work to reduce demand for rare earth materials and emissions from manufacturing. 

P2zero Joins Tech Zero!

We are very proud to be welcomed as a member of Tech Zero, the climate action group powered by Octopus Energy and Tech Nation.  Tech Zero is an association of tech companies who have committed to fighting the climate crisis. 

Members must annually measure and publish all their scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions as well as a net zero plan detailing how they will reach net zero by their target date - in our case by 2030.  More details available here: https://techzero.io/ 

AWS Project at Teesside University

4th October 2024

The initial report for our project looking into the delivery of lab software via AWS AppStream at Teesside University was delivered today.

The study has examined the "cost and carbon" of scenarios at the London and Middleborough campus sites, modelling the energy and embodied carbon of physical device and cloud-based labs.  The study also examined the purchase, running and energy costs of each scenario, with full results expected soon.

Last month saw P2zero process a record number of assessments.  In July we reported on the scope 2 and 3 emissions of over 400,000 devices, including laptops, desktops, monitors, servers, networking devices, smartphones and printers.


The projects were undertaken across the private and public sector as well as in Higher Education, reflecting the increased focus on baselines, carbon reduction plans and sustainable procurement.

Continuing our collaboration with Imperial, P2zero and partners Carbon3IT  ran a data centre workshop for the Imperial College data centre team.  We covered a wide range of topics from compliance, legislation and best practice to bench marking and reporting, including lessons learned from other Higher Education customers.

P2zero lead consultant Tony Sudworth has been selected as the Green Party candidate for Gosport with 83% of the vote.

Tony is an active campaigner for the Green Party and Greenpeace and we wish him every success in representing the citizens of Gosport in the upcoming general election.

We were delighted to hold a sustainability workshop for IT staff at UCB in Belgium following the kick-off of our project for the leading multi-national pharmaceuticals company.  UCB  employs around 9,000 people from its headquarters in Belgium and across nearly 40 countries worldwide.

Our new look P2zero logo (designed by Suzanne Taylor), identity and website were launched this week, reflecting our focus on helping organisations deliver against their sustainability and Net Zero commitments.  

We also received confirmation that we have sole rights to use P2zero having registered the name as our trade mark.

Our "cost and carbon" pathways project for Travis Perkins came to a conclusion with a presentation of the findings to a workshop of the senior IT leadership team.  The project examined a number of strategic options for the organisation's workplace strategy from both a business case and a sustainability perspective.

Imperial College, ranked 7th place in the world university ranking and 3rd place in the UK has engaged P2zero to provide a carbon footprint assessment of their workplace devices and printing.  The project, which will conclude in 2024 will include evaluation of scope 2 and 3 emissions  plus assessment of options for future carbon reduction as part of their Net Zero strategy.
